Secondhand

A system re-designed to facilitate the growth of a small scale mending business

Context

DayOwl is a fully circular backpack company. Aside from selling new products, they also sell secondhand products. Secondhand bags are donated to DayOwl, evaluated, repaired, and sold once they’re as good as new. This system mitigates the waste from backpacks piling up in landfills by extending their lifecycle

Problem

Preparing secondhand bags isn’t easy.
It involves a lot of time, effort, and resources

So as DayOwl continues to grow,
How can we improve the Secondhand system?

Research

Initial observations were gathered through personally running the Secondhand system several times

From here the initial system was identified

Initial System

Identified Pain Points

Process

Observed pain points were translated into various solutions

But that’s not all...

Problem Reframe

Many solutions were established...
But what’s feasible within the next few months? And with the current available resources?

How can we improve the Secondhand system ~short term~?

Analyzing Pain Points

Pain points were sorted into short and long term efforts. Then, short term points were analyzed to determine the most common theme

New Problem Space: Organization

DayOwl Sewing Floor

Process 2.0

Floor plan was redesigned into various concepts and analyzed for pros and cons

Final Concept

The entire Secondhand redesign process was documented and presented to the Day Owl team
who will pass down for future Secondhand coordinators to execute
